National College Signing Day was created by the Obama White House to
"celebrate students going to college the same way we celebrate athletes
and celebrities."
On the heels of this exciting and important opportunity to support young adults and their education, the idea of Gap Year Decision Day was formed, to similarly generate visibility, community and celebration among gap year participants, gap year program providers, schools and more!
Since our inception in 1980, the Center for Interim Programs has worked with over 7,000 individuals who have taken gap time: straight-A high school seniors accepted into top colleges of choice; students eager to explore the world before college; students weary of the academic process or who did not receive hoped-for college acceptances; students with learning differences; college students and graduates questioning their majors and/or job prospects; young professionals considering a career change; and retirees curious to further explore their interests and the world.
At Interim we have always believed that the process of personal expansion and creative risk-taking is relevant to people of all ages, at any stage of life. Our team knows first-hand that the perspective, knowledge and skills gained through a well-planned gap year are critical to one's growth and identity, and as such are a tremendous complement to further personal, academic and career pursuits. A gap year is a rite of passage into the next chapter of life, a chance to ask: “Who am I?”, “What is important to me?” and, “What do I want to create for myself?
Sounds a lot like what people are looking to gain in college, right? Yes!! The gap year has truly become an ideal step into growth and perspective for many young adults around the world, and we want to celebrate it with you. Hence, welcome to May 25th, 2018 aka #GapYearDecisionDay!!!
What can you do?
All 2018-2019 gap year students and parents can participate in this grassroots #GapYearDecisionDay campaign by posting YOUR gap year plans on May 25th through your social media channels!! You should feel proud and excited about your plans to take a gap year - share your news and inspire others in the process!
All gap year alumni (and parents) can also help to spread the word on May 25th by sharing stories, images and memories of what your gap year meant to you.
